An agreement at the G8 summit on a roadmap for reducing greenhouse gases marks significant progress in the fight against global warming, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday.
TOYAKO, Japan; July 10, 2008.- But the Group of Eight industrial nations could not tackle the problem of emissions alone and hard discussions will be needed to reach numerical targets in time for climate change talks next year in Copenhagen, Merkel told reporters.
Earlier, G8 leaders said they would work with nearly 200 states in United Nations climate change talks to adopt a goal of at least halving greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The group also said mid-term goals would be needed to achieve that target.
