Bangladesh, which blamed climate change for natural disasters which killed thousands of its citizens last year, on Monday proposed to allocate some 0.3 percent of next year’s budget to alleviating the problem
DHAKA, Bangladesh; June 10, 2008.- “We proposed to create a fund titled fund for climate change and allocate 3.0 billion taka for this purpose …,” Finance Adviser Mirza Azizul Islam said while announcing a near-one-trillion taka (US$14.6 billion) 2008/9 (July-June) budget.
Bangladesh was devastated by floods and Cyclone Sidr that together killed some 4,500 people last year, and blamed climate change for causing the natural disasters.
“While it is not humanly possible to resist climate change, we have to enhance our ability to (contain) the change and try to minimise the scale of damage and dislocation,” Islam said.
