A Turkish poacher, fishing illegally for turbot in Bulgaria’s waters of the Black Sea was accidentally shot dead on Thursday as police tried to arrest him, authorities said

SOFIA, Bulgaria; April 19, 2008.- Bulgarian border police tried to stop the Turkish boat for checks but the three poachers attempted to rupture and sink the policemen’s rubber boat with bars, police said in a statement.

Two police officers managed to board the poachers’ boat but the fishermen attacked them with poles. One of the Turks was accidentally shot as he tried to grab the pistol of a police officers and died on his way to hospital.

The other two fishermen were arrested.

Turbot fishing has been banned in Bulgarian territorial waters since Tuesday.
