The Rainforest Alliance (RA) is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers.
SmartWood (SW) is a program of the Rainforest Alliance created in 1989; it is the oldest global forestry certification program and has been accredited by the internationally recognized Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). SmartWood’s mission is to promote the implementation of sustainable forestry worldwide. To accomplish this, SmartWood provides forest management and chain of custody certification services.
Position Summary:
The Regional Manager (South America) will be responsible for providing leadership and oversight in coordinating and implementing SW certification activities in the South America region. In conjunction with SW’s overall strategy, s/he will implement the marketing strategy for the region in accordance with annual sales and business targets. S/he will also provide technical guidance to consultants to effectively conduct SW certification services in the region. This position supervises four SW regional team members.
Responsibilities:
Develop, manage and market the SW certification activities in South America (with the exception of Brazil);
Provide project management, certification management and quality control of forest and chain-of-custody services;
Serve as the representative for SW in the region;
Oversee SW regional finance and accounting functions;
Provide regional input as it pertains to policy development and technical improvements of SW certification systems;
Provide customer service to current and prospective clients in region, to include but not limited to, providing information about certification, market linkages, guidance on certification process, logo use, marketing, etc.;
Identify and increase the pool of qualified consultants and assessors and ensure that they follow and implement the SW technical and administrative protocols;
Conduct scopings, field forestry and chain-of-custody certification assessments and audits and write/review certification assessment and audit reports;
Serve as liaison between SWHQ and other organizations, NGOs and stakeholders in region to assist in identifying new alliances as needed and develop SW network capacity; and
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
BA or Licenciatura Degree in forestry, natural resources or related field required; Master’s Degree preferred;
Minimum 7-10 years of applicable professional experience in forestry and/or rural natural resources management and/or economic development ; minimum 3-5 years of managerial level field experience;
Proven experience to effectively market products or services;
FSC certification knowledge and experience;
Knowledge of the SmartWood preferred;
Strong planning, analytical, and project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines;
Strong interpersonal skills;
Must have strong verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English;
Strong computer skills (MS Office and Internet); and
Willing to travel a minimum of 30% of the time.
Salary:
Commensurate with experience.
