Alberta, Canada’s biggest oil-producing province, aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 14 percent from 2005 levels as part of a climate-change plan that imposes few restrictions on major industrial emitters
CALGARY, CANADA: January 28, 2008.- The government of Premier Ed Stelmach said Thursday it plans to form a council made up of government and industry officials charged with setting plans to implement carbon capture and storage and furthering the technology.
The Alberta government said it could direct as much as C$500 million (US$495 million) of provincial and federal money to the project.
Carbon capture and underground storage is expected to account for 70 percent of a targeted 200 megatonne reduction from a business-as-usual scenario within 42 years under what officials called a made-in-Alberta plan.
Stelmach said in a news conference that emissions are still expected to rise in the short term due to Alberta’s oil sands development boom.
The new strategy, which quickly drew condemnation from environmentalists, calls for 12 percent of cuts to come from conservation and energy efficiency.
The government also plans investments in renewable and alternative energy sources such as bioenergy, wind and solar power, it said. (US$1=$1.01 Canadian)
