BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Three years experience in planning and management of processes and projects related to natural resources management and conservation of biodiversity. Preferred experience in working with multidisciplinary teams, local community groups and government authorities.
• Bachelor’s degree in natural resources, environmental studies or related field and two years related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Ability and experience in writing and effectively presenting technical documents in English and Spanish (communication quality and ability).
• Knowledge and working experience in the areas of project planning and implementation. Demonstrated capacity initiating and finalizing projects satisfactorily.
• Ability to independently plan and complete tasks and plan project time frames.
• Ability to coordinate the work of a team and delegate tasks to accomplish multiple priorities.
• Strong administrative skills including attention to detail and numerical ability. Ability to plan, administer, and record results of work-team meetings and activities.
• Ability to use computer programs such as: word processors, spreadsheets, data bases and project administrator (MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Project or similar) or ability to learn fast.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Conservation Practitioner III is responsible for assisting program staff in the Monterrey Office with development and implementation of strategies related to knowledge and capacity building and the conservation of priority sites in northeast Mexico. The Conservation Practitioner assistance will be focused mainly on the technical, logistical and administrative aspects of the projects The Conservation Practitioner will work in coordination with other TNC staff and with other organizations involved in the projects.
• Perform clerical duties related to accounting, human resources, and office management tasks/functions.
• Assist Program staff in the development and implementation of a conservation vision and strategies related to the protection of priority sites in the region. The Conservation Practitioner is expected to assist in capacity gap analyses, partner capacity building, development and implementation of site conservation plans (SCP), ecoregional planning efforts, protection plans and sustainable financing, tourism and community projects in coordination with local partners.
• Assist Program staff in preparing contracts and keeping track of the conservation contracts TNC holds with local partners and ensure the delivery of associated products. Assist in the preparation of written reports and proposals.
• Assist Program staff in the organization of workshops, meetings and donor trips.
• Assist Program staff with administrative tasks related to TNC office in Monterrey.
• Assist Program staff with the coordination of other projects as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
• BA/BS/AS/Technical or vocational degree in science-related field and one to two years related experience in custodial and ecological land management or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience working with or knowledge of natural systems. Ability to recognize plant and animal species as required to complete preserve management activities.
• Knowledge of ecological land management principles
• Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation
• Completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s)
• Managing time and diverse activities under deadlines while delivering quality results
• Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g.; Word, Excel, Web browsers).
• Communicating clearly via written, spoken and graphical means in English and other relevant languages
• Safe use of maintenance tools; including lawn mowers, power tools and construction tools
COMPLEXITY/PROBLEM SOLVING:
• Coordinates multiple projects with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing timeframes
• Interprets guidelines, evaluates information, and modifies processes to adapt to changing circumstances
• Compiles data, resolves disparities and modifies processes to generate plans
• Resolves routine issues independently, consulting with supervisor to develop plans for resolution of complex and unusual problems
• Cultivates and develops creative ideas to improve conservation strategies
• Applies diversified knowledge of scientific principles and practices to a variety of assignments
DISCRETION/LATITUDE/DECISION-MAKING:
• Makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience and judgment
• Perform under minimal and frequently distant supervision, consulting with supervisor in event of any unusual circumstance, problem or question that falls outside of general preserve management realm.
RESPONSIBILITY/OVERSIGHT – FINANCIAL AND SUPERVISORY:
• Supervise administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.
• May lead or monitor work groups consisting of staff, interns, and volunteers covering a wide geographic area
• Financial responsibility may include working within/managing a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, assisting with budget development and meeting fundraising targets.
COMMUNICATIONS/INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
• Networks with diverse groups, including land owners, conservation partners, government officials, donors, board members and the general public to recruit support for the Conservancy and publicize Conservancy efforts
• Provide a variety of information to staff and others, contributing to conservation projects and assisting workflow throughout the organization.
• Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of people, including scientists, preserve staff and others, providing and obtaining needed information
• Interacts with preserve visitors, conveys basic preserve information and leads field trips
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:
The Conservation Practitioner III may work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. These conditions:
• require considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain
• present frequent possibility of injury
• require long hours in isolated settings
