The final phase of a 300-megawatt wind farm in Colorado that will make enough electricity to power about 90,000 homes has begun commercial operation, the developers said Thursday
LOS ANGELES, US; January 8, 2008.- Most of the Cedar Creek wind farm, about 100 miles northeast of Denver, opened in November and the last 20 megawatts have now begun operation and selling power, Babcock & Brown Wind Partners fund and BP Alternative Energy said.
Babcock & Brown said the wind farm near Grover, Colorado in Weld County, had a capital investment requirement of more than US$480 million, and will be two-thirds owned by global asset company Babcock & Brown and one-third owned by BP Alternative Energy.
The general contractor of the 274-turbine wind farm that was completed in about a year was Mortenson Construction.
Power produced from the Cedar Creek is sold to the largest utility in the state, Public Service Company of Colorado, a subsidiary of Xcel Energy Inc.
The largest US wind farm is the 735-MW Horse Hollow project in Texas owned by FPL Energy, a unit of FPL Group.
Babcock & Brown Wind Partners fund (BBW) is the managing member and operator of Cedar Creek. The wind farm is a joint development venture between BBW and BP Alternative Energy North America.
The larger international investment and specialized fund and asset manager Babcock & Brown set up BBW in June 2003 as a single-asset investment vehicle. BBW’s portfolio of assets now include 35 wind projects in the North America, Europe, and Asia.
BBW and Babcock & Brown are listed on the Australian Stock Exchange and have main offices in Sydney. Its primary US office is in San Francisco where the global asset fund was founded in 1977.
BBW fund has a portfolio of interests in 35 wind farms on three continents that has a total installed capacity of about 1,700 MW.
BP said its US wind portfolio includes the opportunity to develop almost 100 projects with a potential total generating capacity of 15,000 MW.
BP America and BP Alternative Energy are both units of the BP BP Alternative Energy combines BP’s interests in low and zero-carbon power generation including wind, solar and hydrogen power.
