SANTA FE RIVER IS MOST ENDANGERED IN US - REPORT
04.19.07 - Leído 90 veces. Enviar esta notaThe Santa Fe River is the most endangered in the United States, suffering from a lack of water so severe that it exists as a dry, weed-choked ditch most of the year, an environmental group reported on Tuesday
WASHINGTON, US; April 19, 2007.- The Santa Fe in New Mexico tops the list of the 10 most endangered US rivers, the American Rivers organization said in a statement.
The other rivers, in order of their rank on the list, were:
– San Mateo Creek, California
– Iowa River, Iowa
– Upper Delaware River, New York state
– White Salmon River, Washington state
– Neches River, Texas
– Kinnickinnic River, Wisconsin
– Neuse River, North Carolina
– Lee Creek, Arkansas and Oklahoma
– Chuitna River, Alaska
Based on nominations from river groups, environmental organizations, outdoor clubs, local governments and taxpayer watchdogs, the Most Endangered Rivers list highlights rivers facing the most uncertain futures, rather than those with the worst chronic problems.
Threats to the rivers on this year’s list include agricultural run-off, water-diverting dams, a proposed coal mine, inadequate sewage treatment, a power line and a transportation corridor, the report said.
